Mention Khao Sok and most travellers immediately picture ancient rainforest, towering limestone cliffs, jungle trails and the spectacular waters of Cheow Lan Lake.
And rightly so.
Khao Sok National Park is one of Southern Thailand’s great natural destinations.
But right next door is another national park that receives a fraction of the attention.
Khlong Phanom National Park.
It’s wilder.
It’s quieter.
It’s rugged.
And for travellers who want to step away from the more established tourist routes and experience a different side of Southern Thailand’s rainforest, it can be something very special indeed.
So, should you choose Khlong Phanom over Khao Sok National Park?
For some travellers, absolutely.
Here’s why.

First, They’re Two Different National Parks
It’s easy to confuse Khao Sok and Khlong Phanom because they’re neighbours and form part of the same extraordinary forested landscape of Surat Thani.
But they are separate national parks.
Khao Sok is considerably better known internationally and attracts visitors for its rainforest, trekking, rivers and, of course, Cheow Lan Lake.
Khlong Phanom sits to the south and offers a rather different experience.
Its landscape is dominated by dramatic limestone karst mountains covered in thick tropical vegetation.
And because considerably fewer tourists know about it, exploring Khlong Phanom can feel like you’re discovering somewhere rather than simply visiting somewhere.
1. Fewer People
This might be the biggest reason of all.
Khao Sok is famous.
Khlong Phanom isn’t.
And sometimes that’s a wonderful thing.
If you’re travelling to Southern Thailand because you want to escape busy beaches, crowded attractions and packed itineraries, there’s something incredibly appealing about walking into a rainforest where you may encounter very few other visitors.
Instead of hearing another group approaching along the trail, you hear the forest.
Birds.
Insects.
Leaves moving in the canopy.
Water flowing somewhere in the distance.
Your own footsteps.
That’s a very different experience.
2. The Trails Feel Wilder
Khao Sok has established trails around its main visitor areas, making it an excellent introduction to rainforest hiking.
Khlong Phanom can feel considerably more adventurous.
The park is dominated by steep limestone terrain, so hiking here can involve challenging climbs and more rugged conditions.
This isn’t necessarily somewhere to arrive in flip-flops expecting a gentle stroll.
For those who are physically able and looking for something more adventurous, however, that’s exactly the attraction.
With an experienced local guide, you can leave the more familiar tourist routes behind and experience a rainforest that still feels wonderfully wild.
3. Giant Bamboo
One of Khlong Phanom’s fascinating natural features is its Chiang Ruun giant bamboo.
This enormous bamboo is considered one of Thailand’s largest bamboo species and can be found growing within the park’s rainforest.
Walking through ordinary bamboo is beautiful.
Standing beneath genuinely giant bamboo is something else.
The huge stems tower overhead and create one of those moments when you suddenly realise just how small you are compared with the natural world around you.
It’s another experience that makes exploring Khlong Phanom different from following the better-known Khao Sok trails.
4. Caves and Limestone Landscapes
If you love caves, limestone and geology, Khlong Phanom has plenty to keep your adventurous side happy.
The park’s steep karst landscape contains caves, rock formations and dramatic terrain created through natural processes over immense periods of time.
Some cave hikes can be physically demanding, involving steep sections and assisted climbs, making them better suited to adventurous travellers rather than those looking for an easy sightseeing excursion.
But that’s part of Khlong Phanom’s character.
It hasn’t been polished into an attraction.
You’re exploring a natural environment.
5. A Different Wildlife Experience
There are never guarantees when it comes to spotting wildlife.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
This isn’t a zoo.
But quieter rainforest has an obvious advantage.
Fewer groups walking through the forest means less human disturbance along some routes, giving you the opportunity to slow down, listen and search for signs of life around you.
Sometimes you’ll see something.
Sometimes you’ll hear something.
Sometimes your guide will point towards a tree and somehow spot an animal you have been staring directly at for five minutes without noticing.
That’s rainforest wildlife watching.
The fun is in never knowing what might appear.
6. You Feel Like an Explorer
This is perhaps harder to explain until you experience it.
There are places where you feel like a tourist.
And there are places where you feel like you’re exploring.
Khlong Phanom often gives you the second feeling.
There’s something exciting about heading into a national park that many international visitors have never even heard of.
You’re not following a list of the “Top 10 Instagram Spots.”
You’re walking.
Looking.
Listening.
Learning.
And discovering whatever the rainforest decides to put in front of you that day.
But Does That Mean You Should Skip Khao Sok?
Absolutely not.
In fact, we think that’s the wrong way to look at it.
Khao Sok and Khlong Phanom don’t need to compete.
They complement each other.
Khao Sok gives you access to some of Southern Thailand’s most iconic experiences, particularly the spectacular Cheow Lan Lake, along with established jungle trails and river activities.
Khlong Phanom gives you something different.
Quieter trails.
More challenging hikes.
Dramatic limestone terrain.
Giant bamboo.
Caves.
And that wonderful feeling of being somewhere few other travellers have discovered.
If you have enough time, experience both.
Who Is Khlong Phanom Best For?
Khlong Phanom could be perfect for you if you love:
Nature without the crowds.
More adventurous hiking.
Wild rainforest.
Wildlife watching.
Photography.
Caves and limestone landscapes.
Discovering places away from the usual tourist trail.
If your idea of the perfect rainforest experience involves manicured pathways, predictable schedules and lots of facilities, it might not be your first choice.
But if you hear the words “less travelled” and immediately become interested…
Khlong Phanom deserves a place on your itinerary.
